1. Human trafficking affects 161 countries. Countries are either mostly source or destination. The US is a huge destination country for human trafficking.
2. There are an estimated 200,000 modern-day slaves in the United States
3. 50% of these are children
4. Traffickers prey on the vulnerable and such activities occur in places such as residential brothels, hostess clubs, online escort services, fake massage businesses, strip clubs, street prostitution and truck stops. Trafficking can also occur in nail salons, restaurants, bars and hotels.
5. You can help. If you suspect trafficking is occurring near you, call the National trafficking hotline at: 1-888-3737-888
Red flags of trafficking include:
- Living with employer
- Poor living conditions
- Multiple people in cramped space
- Inability to speak to individual alone
- Answers appear to be scripted and rehearsed
- Employer is holding identity documents
- Signs of physical abuse
- Submissive or fearful
- Unpaid or paid very little
- Under 18 and in prostitution
